3 Things You Need To Know About Towel Maintenance

3 Things You Need To Know About Towel Maintenance

While people spend considerable time buying the right towel, not everyone pays attention to maintenance. For instance, one study found that nearly 90% of towels are contaminated with coliform bacteria and likely to make you sick. Damp towels are the worst – offering the perfect environment for various disease-causing bacteria, including E. coli and salmonella.

If you do not know how to maintain towels, here’s a short guide to help you:

a) Fabric Softeners Do More Harm Than Good:

We always advice our clients not to use fabric softeners for Loopys Turkish towels. They contain petroleum-based ingredients and oils that coat the towel and even hinder absorbency. To get rid of this coating, you’ll have to wash it frequently, thereby affecting its durability.

Instead, add vinegar to the rinse cycle or soak the towel in a cup of vinegar to remove some of the gunk and smell that’s left behind.

b) Wash The Towel After 2-3 Uses:

Hygienists recommend washing bath towels at least 2 to 3 times every week. This is important to remove any germs. If possible, air-dry the towel completely after every use.

It also depends on how frequently you use the towel. For instance, if you shower more than once a day, make sure the towel is laundered every day. Similarly, gym towels should be washed after every use because it sops up the sweat and stays damp in the bag for a few hours before you can dry it. If you have eczema or other skin issues, wash all your towels to prevent further irritation. Towels that have body fluids must also be washed after every use.

c) Cleaning Towels The Right Way:

Wash like clothes together. For instance, whitewash towels must be washed using warm water, detergent, and non-chlorine bleach. This is because white towels seem to shine brighter when washed in hot water.

If the towel smells damp, wash the towel with half-cup of baking soda without detergent and then rewash it with detergent. Add a tiny drop of essential oil if you want the towels to smell pleasant. Don’t overload towels in the washing machine because a heavy load takes a toll on the washing machine.

And if you’re using our Turkish towels, you don’t have to soak or wash them with hot water. Loopys Turkish towels become softer and more absorbent with use. They can be machine or hand washed in normal water.
