Why Is Organic Cotton Better Than Regular Cotton?

 Cotton is one of the oldest cultivated fabrics in the world. Apparently, it was first cultivated in 3000 BC in the Indus River Valley. People prefer cotton because it is hypoallergenic, durable, and naturally absorbent. Being a breathable fabric, cotton allows the skin to breathe, reducing rashes.

But if there’s something better than cotton, it is organic cotton! In fact, anyone’s who used the latter will tell you that there’s a world of difference between regular cotton and organic cotton. Here’s why we think you should prefer organic Turkish towels:

 1. Regular Cotton Contains Harmful Chemicals

Conventional cotton starts with GMO seeds modified to be resistant to bugs. Over time, when these bugs become stronger, you’ll need pesticides to combat them. No wonder cotton is referred to as ‘one of the dirtiest crops in the world!’ It consumes over 16% of the world’s insecticides and $2billion worth of pesticides every year. The chemicals in these pesticides contaminate the soil, the air we breathe, and the water we drink.

Organic cotton is made without harmful chemicals – they do not damage the soil, water, or air. As for the bugs, they are controlled with insects that feed on these pests, thereby creating a natural and balanced ecosystem.

2. Conventional Cotton Is Resource Intensive:

Did you know it takes around 2,700 litres of fresh water to make one cotton t-shirt? That’s a massive injustice to the 1 billion people who do not have access to fresh water. Millions of children do not make it into adulthood because of waterborne diseases caused by a lack of freshwater. And yet, cotton producers use over 10,000 litres of water to process just one kilo of conventional cotton.

3. The Manufacturing Process Involves Use Of Hundreds Of Chemicals:

Processing regular cotton involves a lot of chemicals, heavy metals, chemical dyes, and chlorine. Even prewashing the finished product does not remove the residue of these chemicals that could potentially cause skin allergies like eczema.

Organic cotton uses safer and natural alternatives to chemical and water-based dyes and peroxide for whitening.
